I’ve worked in all sorts of educational positions such as high school teacher, textbook writer, online learning content creator, outdoor educator, ski instructor, and teacher certification training course developer, to name a few.
I’ve been full-time tutoring all aspects of various standardized tests, including the SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT, and many other standardized tests, for over 20 years. My work in test prep has included writing course materials used worldwide for one of the largest test prep companies, training new test prep instructors, designing and creating entire prep courses for a large test prep company, writing parts of the book that many of the less experienced tutors use to read through and declare themselves tutors, and writing published books for review for math, history, and reading state-level standardized tests.
For SAT/ACT and other standardized test prep, I like to individualize the program for each student. We focus on both the content of the test and the strategies for how best to tackle the test and how to find the proper pacing balance of working efficiently to get to “enough” questions while slowly enough to maximize accuracy. Some students need more help with content, while others are happy to work through more content review on their own so that we can focus more on strategies.
I tend toward a more informal “dorky-big sister” approach, although now that I’ve been tutoring for so long, I’m more of the dorky aunt at this point. I charge less than other tutors who may have less experience or knowledge than I do because I do not have an advertising budget (all of my students are referrals from previous students or from other college counselors).
My work in test prep and textbook writing led me to tutor academically as well. For the past 14 years, I’ve tutored math, language arts, and study-skills and organization for grades 7 through 12.
I’ve worked with so many students in test prep and their application process, and this led naturally to providing more college counseling services over the years and I’ve worked with several college admissions folks for some additional “inside scoop”.
